Collection: Donburi Rice Bowls

In Japan, rice comes with almost every meal. The chawan is the everyday rice bowl, held in the hand. The donburi, wider, is both a bowl and a dish: a bowl of hot rice with toppings, such as gyudon (beef), katsudon (breaded pork) or oyakodon (chicken and egg).

Japanese rice bowls, chawan, donburi bowls or small bowls for side dishes: our collection brings them together in porcelain and ceramic, single or in sets of 2 to 5. They are made in Japan, mostly in Toki and Tajimi, in the Mino region (Gifu Prefecture), others in Hasami (Nagasaki Prefecture).

The decorations draw on classic Japanese motifs: tako karakusa, whose scrolls recall the suckers of an octopus; seigaiha waves; asanoha stars; plum and cherry blossoms; tokusa stripes; whales or little cats. Other bowls play on the glaze: tenmoku, speckles, crackle, drips or brushstrokes. You will also find a lidded donburi bowl and a suribachi, the Japanese grooved bowl for grinding sesame.

Porcelain bowls are dishwasher and microwave safe. Ceramic bowls are best washed by hand and can go in the microwave. Find all our bowls in the bowls and salad bowls collection.
