Collection: Tea Sets

In Japan, green tea is served in small amounts, in handleless cups held with both hands. A tea set brings these matching cups together, sometimes with their teapot, to share tea with others.

The Taketokusa set combines a side-handled teapot and five cups in Hasami porcelain, from Nagasaki Prefecture. Its name joins take, bamboo, and tokusa, horsetail: fine vertical green lines recall their straight stems.

Our sets of five ceramic cups come from the Mino region, around Toki and Tajimi in Gifu Prefecture. The Nishikiori decoration, made of small flowers and fine branches, recalls Japanese brocade fabrics. The purple fan model features an auspicious motif: the opening fan suggests growing prosperity.

The ichimatsu soba cups, in porcelain, feature an indigo blue checkerboard. The pattern is named after Sanogawa Ichimatsu, an 18th-century kabuki actor who wore it on his costume. In Japan, they are used for dipping cold noodles; they also make lovely teacups.
