In Japan, there is a bowl for almost every dish. Here are the five shapes to know, with the indicative sizes of our models.
1. The rice bowl (chawan)
This is the bowl for every meal, held in the hand. Our rice bowls generally measure around twelve centimetres in diameter. They are also used for a small soup or a side dish.
2. The donburi
Wider, the donburi is both a bowl and a dish: hot rice with toppings, such as gyudon (beef), katsudon (breaded pork) or oyakodon (chicken and egg). Find them with our rice bowls in the rice and donburi bowls collection.
3. The ramen bowl
Deep and wide, it must hold the broth, the noodles and the toppings. Our ramen bowls measure about 15 to 23 cm in diameter and also suit udon, soba or a poke bowl.
4. The matcha bowl
The matcha chawan is wide and deep enough to whisk the tea with a chasen, the bamboo whisk. Our matcha bowls measure about 10 to 12.5 cm in diameter.
5. The salad bowl (ōbachi)
Placed in the middle of the table, the large serving bowl is shared by all. Our salad bowls measure about 16 to 28.5 cm, for salads, vegetables or cold noodles.
Porcelain or ceramic?
Porcelain is dishwasher and microwave safe. Ceramic is best washed by hand and can go in the microwave. Discover all our models in the bowls and salad bowls collection.
