Japanese mug, mauve flowers

Mauve flowers on fine stems, giving this mug an almost springlike softness.

The flowers, in several sizes, are drawn in mauve and lavender, with a darker centre and outline. They are linked by fine brown stems that curl into small tendrils and carry long leaves. The drawing is delicate and lets the white background breathe.

Looking closely, you notice that the wall is not smooth: light horizontal ridges run all around the mug and catch the light. They give the decoration a little depth and a lively feel in the hand.

The shape is straight, with a rounded handle outlined in brown. The inside is white. The foot is left as unglazed orange-brown clay, creating a pretty contrast with the pastel tones of the decoration.

The mug is shaped in a mould, then finished by hand; the decoration is applied with transfer paper. The position of the flowers can therefore vary slightly from piece to piece.
