Japanese Salad Bowl, Deep Blue with Plum Blossom

A large deep blue salad bowl, with branches of plum blossom inside.

The outside is a dense, plain blue that gives the salad bowl an understated look. Inside, the glaze lightens into brighter nuances and reveals fine dark branches bearing small white flowers.

In Japan, the plum tree, ume, is the first tree to blossom at the end of winter, sometimes still under snow, well before the cherry tree. Its flowering heralds the return of spring, and its blossom symbolises perseverance and renewal. It is one of the best-loved patterns in Japanese tableware.

At 23.9 cm in diameter and 8.7 cm high, it suits salads, noodles or a dish to share. It can also serve as a fruit bowl or a decorative catch-all.

It completes the bowls, plates and salad bowls of the shop’s plum blossom range for a matching set.
