Description
A blue and white ramen bowl, in two decorations: large waves or fine lines.
The first decoration covers the bowl with large waves in overlapping arcs, dark blue on a white background, inside and out. The second is drawn with fine blue lines running down from the rim to the foot.
The waves in overlapping arcs form seigaiha, literally “waves of the blue sea”. This pattern takes its name from an ancient dance of the Japanese imperial court, and is associated with wishes for calm, peace and good fortune that keeps renewing itself, like the waves. The fine lines, for their part, recall tokusa, inspired by the straight stems of horsetail.
The unglazed foot is the colour of the clay. At 18 cm in diameter and 8.5 cm high, this bowl suits ramen, udon, soba or donburi.
