Description
Two deep plates covered in blue and white waves, edged in black.
The pattern covers the whole interior: overlapping arcs in fine white lines on a blue background, as regular as scales. A black rim frames the decoration and brings out the blue. The underside, lighter, is lightly speckled.
This pattern of overlapping arcs has a name: seigaiha, literally “waves of the blue sea”. It represents the swell of the open sea in regular fans and takes its name from an ancient dance of the Japanese imperial court, whose dancers wore costumes decorated with it. It is associated with wishes for calm, peace and good fortune that renews itself, like the waves.
At 23 cm in diameter and 5 cm high, they suit dishes in sauce, curry, pasta, mixed salads or thick soups. Their depth prevents spills.
Nami means wave in Japanese: this marine pattern is one of the most emblematic decorations of Japanese tableware, as elegant for every day as for entertaining.
