Japanese mug, blue clouds

A mug covered with small curling clouds, drawn in a very fine blue line.

The clouds are traced in outline only: scrolls that close in on themselves, packed close together all the way around. The line is light, white dominates, and the decoration seems almost airy compared with the denser patterns in the range.

In Japan, the stylised cloud, kumo, is an old motif. It appears on fabrics, lacquerware and tableware, often associated with the sky, the passing of the seasons and good fortune.

The shape is straight and slightly tall, with a rounded handle edged in brown. The inside is white and bright. The foot, left as unglazed orange-brown clay, gives the mug a warm anchor beneath this light decoration.

Shaped in a mould, the mug is then finished by hand; the decoration is applied with transfer paper, which explains small differences from one mug to another.

For tea, coffee or a hot drink enjoyed in peace. Also available in a larger size. Made in Japan, in the Mino region.
