Description
Five blue and white bowls, five different designs: a small anthology of Japanese patterns.
Each bowl carries its own pattern in blue on white: chrysanthemums and foliage, waves in overlapping fans, garlands, scrolls and flowers. Hana means flower in Japanese, and plant motifs recur from one bowl to the next. A thin brown line highlights the rims.
This pattern of overlapping arcs has a name: seigaiha, literally “waves of the blue sea”. It represents the swell of the open sea in regular fans and takes its name from an ancient dance of the Japanese imperial court, whose dancers wore costumes decorated with it. It is associated with wishes for calm, peace and good fortune that renews itself, like the waves.
At 15.7 cm in diameter and 7.4 cm high, these bowls suit rice, soups, salads, cereal or desserts. Their mid-size makes them everyday bowls, easy to use at every meal.
Together, they make a mix-and-match yet harmonious set, thanks to the shared blue. Everyone can recognise their bowl by its pattern.
