The dense, regular decoration covers the mug from the rim down to the base.

This decoration is called tako karakusa. Karakusa refers to a pattern of curling plant tendrils, and tako means octopus: the small leaves along the tendrils recall its suckers. Dense and rhythmic, it is one of the most emblematic patterns of Japanese tableware.

The base is left as matt, unglazed beige clay, which makes the mug look as if it stands on a small plinth. The straight handle, highlighted in bronze brown, offers a firm grip. At 13 cm high and 400 ml, it suits large teas, coffees or hot chocolates.

It is part of the shop’s series of large 400 ml mugs, available in several patterns in the same size: one for each member of the family, or a collection to build.

Highlights

Tako karakusa pattern: blue tendrils, a traditional Japanese pattern.

Large size: 400 ml for big hot drinks.

Beige clay base: matt and unglazed.

Bronze handle: straight, with a good grip.

Made in Japan: series of large mugs in various patterns.

Product information

Type: large Japanese mug

Material: ceramic

Origin: Japan (Toki-Tajimi area, Gifu Prefecture, home of Mino ware)

Dimensions: Ø 8.6 cm, height 13 cm

Capacity: 400 ml

Colours: blue, white, beige, bronze

Pattern: tako karakusa

Finish: glazed, unglazed base

Care: hand washing recommended, microwave safe

Style: traditional Japanese

How to use

It goes well with the other large mugs in the same size, with flowers or waves.
