assiettes-carrees-japonaises-fleurs-de-prunier
Japanese Square Plates, Plum Blossoms – Set of 3

Three deep blue square plates, crossed by fine branches of plum blossom.

On a nuanced, almost cloudy blue glaze, fine brown branches stretch from one corner to another. They carry small white flowers with rounded petals, sometimes grouped, sometimes alone, as if they had just opened. The contrast between the dark blue and the white of the flowers gives the decoration great clarity.

The blue is not uniform: it lightens in places, darkens elsewhere, and reveals slight variations reminiscent of a winter sky. At the edges, the glaze turns black and outlines the square shape.

In Japan, the plum tree, ume, is the first tree to blossom at the end of winter, sometimes still under the snow. Its blooming heralds spring and its flower symbolises perseverance and renewal. It is one of the most common motifs in Japanese tableware.

The corners rise gently, giving each plate a slight depth. At 17.5 cm square, they serve as dessert or starter plates, or as small serving dishes for sushi, fruit or pastries.

Highlights

Ume pattern: branches of plum blossom, a symbol of renewal in Japan.

Deep blue: a nuanced glaze with changing reflections, edges outlined in black.

Square shape: slightly raised corners for a neat presentation.

Set of 3: a matching set for serving several people.

Everyday use: durable porcelain, made in Japan.

Product information

Type: Japanese square plates

Contents: 3 plates

Material: porcelain

Origin: Japan (Toki-Tajimi area, Gifu Prefecture, home of Mino ware)

Dimensions: 17.5 × 17.5 cm, height 2.4 cm

Colours: blue, white, black

Pattern: branches of plum blossom (ume)

Finish: glazed

Care: dishwasher and microwave safe

Style: traditional Japanese

How to use

The blue background shows off light or colourful food: rice, raw fish, citrus fruit, red berries or cream desserts.
